AWAITING PICTURE
An ambitious initiative thought to be the first of its kind that brings sixth form students and employers together has been launched in Bradford by Relay Recruitment.

Careers Question Time follows the format of the BBC TV programme, and each forum will see six representatives from employing organisations take questions about career progression; relevant degree courses; and their own company from the students. Afterwards, there will be open discussions.
Each panel will have broadly the same profile:

• A Head of HR
• An Emerging Technology/IT Specialist
• A Media Player (journalist, PR, designer etc)
• A Small Businessman/Woman
• A Private Recruitment Practitioner
• A Business Representative (CBI, IOD etc)

The first event will take place at Dixon’s City Technical College, Bradford, on October 12th at 4.30pm. Representatives of major employing organisations are expected to be on the panel, with the Senior Assistant Editor of the Bradford Telegraph & Argus and a Board Director of PACE Micro Technology already pencilled in to appear. The Careers Question Time Roadshow will then be rolled out to other schools and colleges in Bradford and West Yorkshire as an ongoing series.

The invitation to students is memorable. It takes the form of a CD of specially commissioned tracks from top record label, Ministry of Sound. Entitled The Essential Mix, the name alludes to both the diversity of employing organisations taking part and the importance of bringing them together with students.

The sleeve notes cleverly intersperse details of the music with those of the events, and a tear-off slip allows the teenagers to pose questions in advance. These are posted in specially designed mailboxes that will be placed at the entrance to schools. Places are limited, with students who post the best questions in advance being asked to attend.

Says Relay MD Steven Street, “As far as we know a project quite as ambitious as this has not been attempted in the UK before. Despite its novelty, though, we were anxious to take no chances with the marketing, and decided that since music is a bedrock of most teenagers’ lives, an exclusive ‘Ministry-branded’ dance compilation would be investigated rather than chucked away.”

The Relay Recruitment Group has won many awards for its innovative marketing material and the limited edition six-track album will be entered for the REC Recruitment Industry Awards 2001.
