CAREERS QUESTION TIME ROAD SHOW
October 2003
The new academic year has kicked off with a fresh series of Relay’s Careers Question Time events across West Yorkshire. The CQT Road show completed its run with an outstanding forum at Allerton Grange High School in Leeds.
Sixth formers were joined by ‘A’ level students from four neighbouring schools to put their questions to a seven-strong panel, comprising regional employers, educationalists and business support specialists.

One of these was Yorkshire Evening Post Education Correspondent, Ian Prosser, who reported the event later in the week. The article prompted much feedback from employers, schools and colleges, all eager to participate in future events.

Recently, the subject of a five-figure bid by an international recruitment giant, CQT is unique in the way it brings sixth form students and employers together.

Each event follows the format of the BBC’s Question Time, with a highly knowledgeable and experienced panel taking questions about career progression, relevant degree courses and their own organisations from students. A senior Relay player acts as chairman and the final third of the programme sees open discussions.

The invitation to students is memorable. It takes the form of a CD of specially commissioned tracks from top record label, Ministry of Sound. Entitled The Essential Mix, the name alludes to both the diversity of employing organisations taking part and the importance of bringing them together with the youngsters.

Sleeve notes cleverly intersperse details of the music with those of the events, and a tear-off slip allows the teenagers to pose questions in advance. These are posted in Relay-branded mailboxes placed at the entrance to schools. Places for each event are limited, with students who post the best questions in advance being asked to attend.

Says Relay managing director, Steven Street, “As far as we know, something quite as ambitious as this has not been mounted in the UK before.

“Despite its novelty, though, we were anxious to take no chances with the marketing, and decided that since music is the bedrock of most teenagers’ lives, an exclusive Ministry dance compilation would prompt investigation rather than be thrown away.”

CQT won the Best Recruitment Marketing Campaign category of the REC Recruitment Industry Awards 2001.
