Sign up to sponsor Steven’s marathon effort

Relay managing director, Steven Street is swapping training programmes for trainers and fast-tracking for the long haul as he prepares for a marathon charity effort.

Steven, will be taking part in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km run in November to raise funds and awareness for the National Autistic Society, a charity he has a personal interest in.
His two younger sons, Oscar, (4), and Barney, (3), both suffer from Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The National Autistic Society champions the rights and needs of the half million UK sufferers and ensures that they and their families receive the services and support to which they are entitled.

Says Steven, “Things most people take for granted - social interaction, learning, cognitive skills and independence - are alien to autistic people, for whom there is presently no cure.

“Although sufferers may be remote, detached, unpredictable, challenging, non-conforming and aggressive, an upside sees gifted individuals who can also be loving, fun and excitable.”

The boys, as with most suffering from ASD (and related conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome) receive regular clinical intervention and special structured educational support. Autistics’ carers are ‘on-call’ 24/7 - a stark fact, made even more salutary when one is reminded that they will require some form of support for life.

“Oscar and Barney are happy, but hard work,” Steven continues. “We know they are always going to be the latter, but supporting the NAS will ensure that they remain secure and fulfilled too.”
