YORK HIGH FLIER JOINS RELAY
February 2007
One of York’s most experienced recruitment professionals, Elaine Harvey, has signed up with the city’s newest, most idiosyncratic consultancy.

She joins Relay as branch manager of the recently opened North Yorkshire headquarters on Micklegate, after five years as senior consultant at Hays and an earlier five at Brook Street.

Elaine has been tasked with consolidating early interest from employers and staff in Relay’s innovative approach and ensuring that the blueprint is successful in York as demand grows.

She said: “Having gone as far as I could in national agencies, I sought a fresh challenge, without moving away from a city whose economic landscape and employment trends I know inside out – and where I have many established contacts.

“My clients and candidates are important to me; many relationships go back more than a decade and I couldn’t just sever them and move away, so when Relay located here late last year, it was the ideal opportunity to provide a consistency of contact and improved service, while advancing my career.

“I was intrigued by the way the company does things and found the philosophy of its founders both inspiring and sensible.”

One of the country’s most individual recruitment groups, Relay’s business model is based on a culture of constant, uncompromising quality and it aspires to unparalleled performance levels, both in staff supplied and human resources services.  To this end, the company will not deal with clients who merely offer the minimum wage and don’t invest in their workforce.

It enlists the highest calibre candidates by offering them a complete consultancy.  Support services include assistance with CV preparation and honing interview techniques with rehearsals and tips. “The approach is more akin to that of an agent - with individuals represented rather than simply ‘placed’,” said Harvey.

She continued: “Ever more employers are recognising that their productivity, reputations and profits are boosted by installing well-paid, properly-trained, motivated workers in all roles, at all levels. Relay has successfully promoted this approach, servicing organisations that adopt it.”

With an eye to attracting and retaining its own talent, the company has instituted personal development and profit share schemes that rival those of far larger groups.

Already, Elaine has employed one former colleague to enhance the York team’s experience, developing Relay’s regional presence with the right people. Boasting great local market knowledge, it works closely with York employing organisations, business support groups and individuals in all sectors of the local economy.

These partnerships have led to Relay’s involvement in a project helping underprivileged and disadvantaged secondary education age pupils improve their ability to compete in the job market.

It works with Holgate-based The Rathbone Centre, which supports York schoolchildren excluded from full time education and North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership, part of the Learning Skills Council, to help youngsters prepare for the workplace. This it does by educating them on the recruitment process and imparting the necessary social and communication skills and interview techniques to secure the role they seek.
