‘Hopping mad’ Relay fundraiser set for Roundhay Park
Relay Recruitment is enlisting volunteers and sponsors for a charity fundraising race with a difference in Roundhay Park, Leeds. The cruel twist, for maximum visibility and to ensure that sponsors get their money’s worth, is that participants will compete on Space Hoppers.

The ‘bounceathon’, in aid of the National Autistic Society, takes place on Sunday 25th November, starting at 10.00am. There will be a number of trophies for winning ‘jockeys’ and all riders will get to keep their mounts.
Originally set to be part of the Leeds Abbey Dash, the Relay project quickly outgrew that event, threatening to overshadow it with its eye-catching originality and the road space needed by the squadron of hoppers.
Managing director, Steven Street, masterminded the ambitious project. His two younger sons are autistic and he and his wife have first-hand experience of the time, effort and emotional expenditure required to look after them and know there is a prospect of lifelong home-based or residential care.
He was inspired to draft in the Space Hoppers when they were used in a marketing campaign celebrating the Yorkshire group’s tenth anniversary.

The National Autistic Society champions the rights and needs of those with autism. It provides them and their families with help, advice and services that they can access, trust and rely on and which make a huge difference to their lives.
|
With many autistics having to remain at home as adults, great pressure is put on parents and extended families. Sadly, institutional inertia and insensitive bureaucracy still abound access to special education alone is a minefield to negotiate.
As such, parents' careers are often given up and other huge personal and financial sacrifices made to ensure those with autism enjoy the quality of life they are entitled to. Further difficulties come as carers age and with rising costs.

The work of the NAS is a crucial lifeline to thousands of people in the UK, so please help the Relay 'hoppers' raise as much money as possible for this very worthwhile charity.

Every contribution will make an immediate and lasting impact on the lives of those coping with this exhausting and frustrating lifelong condition.
